The director general of Ports and Maritime Affairs of Hormozgan Province stated that following the completion of the design and site selection phases, two international ports in the Makran region and in Bandar Lengeh would be added to Iran’s 15 major ports.
Hossein Abbasnejad explained that the new port of Bandar Lengeh has been designed with an initial area of 300 hectares, expandable to 1,500 hectares, and will be capable of accommodating 50,000-ton vessels in its first phase.
He added that the Makran Port, with 1,100 hectares of hinterland, has been designed to handle mega-size vessels.
Although port construction is a time-consuming and long-term process, he expressed hope that with the completion of site selection procedures, executive operations for these national projects would begin soon.
Elaborating on the latest status of port infrastructure development in southern Iran and the country’s largest coastal province, Abbasnejad said a project to connect 2,700 hectares of new land to the territory of Shahid Rajaee Port—through a strategic bridge currently under construction—will become operational in the first half of the next Iranian year.
He added that once completed, the port’s total area will increase to 5,100 hectares, effectively doubling the logistical and hinterland capacities of the country’s largest commercial port.
Shahid Rajaee Port currently records the highest volume of maritime traffic among all Iranian ports, with all movements monitored under strict supervision by the Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) sector and in accordance with the highest safety standards of the Ports and Maritime Organization, he added.
